Job Description

St Albans Cycle Hub Manager – Cottonmill Community Centre & Cycling Activity Park

Are you passionate about cycling, and would you like to play a big part in establishing an exciting new Cycling Activity Park in St Albans?

If your current role feels a bit samey and the monotony grinds your gears, then this role may satisfy your thirst for variety; there’s a lot to do and we want you along for the ride!

If you have a background in retail management, can inspire others to deliver an outstanding experience, and you’re looking for a fresh challenge – we need you to come and run our new Cycle Hub; if you already hold a Cytech Level 2 or above qualification – even better!

The Cycle Hub is at the centre of the new Cycling Activity Park, it has:

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day booking and overseeing of the Cycle Activity Park
  • A Cycle Training school to get beginners cycling and build their confidence
  • A diverse gathering of volunteers, recognised for the value they bring and engaged with the cause; people love to give their time for good causes, feel a sense of purpose and giving and we need you to attract and engage them.
  • A comprehensive ride programme and calendar of community events to attract people around the benefits of cycling and encourage their participation
  • A fully-equipped workshop for servicing, repairing, and reconditioning of bikes
  • A retail area for bike parts, accessories, and apparel.

We see the role changing over time, and we need you to be willing and flexible; being part of it from the outset is to everybody’s benefit. Initially we’ll need you to recruit and train your team and embed and refine the day-to-day operating rhythm. There’ll be meetings to attend with stakeholders from the council, local and national cycling bodies, and community groups.

We’ll need you to help set up the online and social media presence and bring online the systems that’ll be needed day-to-day but don’t worry - we don’t need you to be a software engineer or an expert web developer – you just need to be confident enough to grasp it and lead your team to use it!

We’ll need you to provide some regular reports and updates to our sponsors, and also to fulfil some duties relating to the Community Interest Company, but don’t worry, we’ll help you with this if it’s not your forte (some of it is new to us, too!).


40 hours per week, including weekends & evenings on a regular basis. Bank Holidays, as required.


20 days per year + public holiday allowance


Up to £30k, depending on experience

Skills/Experience Required

Essential skills / experience:

  • Experience of having managed and developed a busy retail operation (preferably in a cycling context), supervising / managing staff and driving high standards and performance
  • Ability to adapt and relate to customers and stakeholders with varying levels of understanding, instinctive collaborator
  • Adept with computer systems, experience of retail point of sale / stock management, website content creation and spreadsheets a distinct advantage
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a confident and coherent delivery.

Desirable skills / qualifications:

  • Cytech Level 2 or desire to attain
  • Focused under pressure with the ability to prioritise and manage expectations
  • Hardcore team player
  • Enthusiastic cyclist – a clear advantage / preferred.
